Dawn Harbor, a native Iowan, and life long artist, grew up along the Mississippi River. While creating jewelry from the river’s treasures, and playing in the sun, Dawn learned to sculpt the earth around her.
Since moving to Iowa City in 1985, founder of Iowa City’s “own”, Dawn’s Hide & Bead Away, a nationally renown bead store, and jewelry design business, Dawn found her niche as an artist. Spending her days teaching, designing, playing with her clients, and raising a family, Dawn developed a very expressive way to present color and light.
With glass, Dawn finds movement, and inspiration waiting within the rods of color. Having mastered her very own style of glass art, the result is bold and vibrant jewelry, to be noticed, and admire.
How to Think About the Glass
Flame working: sculpting hot glass over a torch
Piattini: Italian for small plate, a nod to the soft Italian glass I most often use
up to 25mm
Piatti: Italian for large plate, another nod to the soft Italian glass I most often use
Filigree: colored line floating in clear glass
Twist: colors are laid down with a base/background color as listed below
Onyx Twist: black
Marble Twist: white
Chocolate Twist: brown
Transparent/Jewel Tone: clear color you can see through
Translusent: light can easily pass through
Opaque: solid colored, light cannot pass through
Frosted: etched or matte surface on glass
Lip: border edge color
Retro: lip of one color surrounding another
Mod: a wide lip, smaller core
Ribbon: a wide ribbon of color moving through another
Silver: all silver is sterling silver
Gold Fill: 14k gold encapsulating high quality jeweler’s brass, will not tarnish and offers gold jewelry at a fraction of the cost
Chain Guide
Not all necks are the same size. To understand how a length of chain will fit you, cut a piece of string to the desired length and wrap it around your neck, meeting the ends together.
